A Jet for Every Journey
Range buys you cabin, cabin buys you hourly rate, and the right answer is rarely the largest aircraft you could afford. Here is what each category actually costs you.
Categories
Five categories, honestly described.
Every category buys you something and costs you something else. The figures below are typical for the types listed; the exact aircraft offered to you will be quoted with its own specification.

01 — Efficient. Versatile. Refined.
Light Jets
London to Nice. Dubai to Mumbai. Short runways and small fields others cannot reach.
- Representative types
- Citation CJ3+, Phenom 300E, Learjet 75
- Passengers
- 6–7
- Range
- approx. 1,800–2,000 nm
No separate lavatory compartment on some types, and baggage is the real constraint. Four passengers with ski bags is a different aircraft.

02 — The ideal balance.
Midsize Jets
The workhorse of European and domestic US business travel. Stand-up cabin on the Latitude.
- Representative types
- Citation XLS+, Citation Latitude, Hawker 900XP
- Passengers
- 8–9
- Range
- approx. 2,100–2,700 nm
The first category where a full-height cabin and an enclosed lavatory stop being a luxury and start being standard.

03 — Speed without compromise.
Super Midsize
Transcontinental US non-stop. London to the Gulf. Europe to West Africa.
- Representative types
- Challenger 350, Citation Longitude, Praetor 600
- Passengers
- 9–10
- Range
- approx. 3,200–4,000 nm
The efficiency sweet spot: most of the cabin of a heavy jet, at meaningfully lower hourly cost.

04 — Ultimate range. Absolute comfort.
Heavy Jets
Transatlantic with a full cabin. Separate seating zones, a proper galley, a crew rest area.
- Representative types
- Gulfstream G450 and G550, Falcon 900LX, Legacy 650
- Passengers
- 12–14
- Range
- approx. 4,000–6,750 nm
Where a flight attendant becomes standard rather than requested, and where sleeping properly becomes possible.

05 — Continents, without a stop.
Ultra Long Range
New York to Hong Kong. London to Sydney with one stop. A private bedroom and a full-size shower on the 7500.
- Representative types
- Gulfstream G650ER, Bombardier Global 7500, Falcon 8X
- Passengers
- 14–19
- Range
- approx. 6,450–7,700 nm
Availability is genuinely limited worldwide. On these aircraft, booking a week ahead is not the same as booking a day ahead.
Selection
How we choose
the aircraft.
Four things decide it, and price is not the first of them.
- Age is the wrong number
- A twelve-year-old airframe with a cabin refurbished last season beats a newer one that has been flown hard and left alone. We look at the refurbishment date, not the year on the registration.
- The cabin you actually get
- Two aircraft of the same type can be laid out completely differently. Eight seats or ten, a divan that converts or one that does not, an enclosed lavatory or a curtain. We check the specific airframe, not the brochure.
- Maintenance programme
- Whether the airframe and engines sit on a manufacturer-backed programme tells you how an owner has treated the asset. It is a dull question that separates two otherwise identical aircraft.
- Performance on your runway
- Range figures assume an empty aeroplane on a long runway at sea level on a cool day. Loaded, in August, out of a short field at altitude, the honest number is different, and it is the one we quote against.
